India, a place where cricket kept dominating over all other sports till years, is now paving way for a lesser known format of football, commonly known as Futsal. It is a known fact that Cricket is the most popular sport in India, but due to the recent scandals of match fixing in the IPL Matches, the viewers are losing interest in the game, though not completely. The T20 boomed due to the high intensity of the format which is a lot similar to Futsal as the English Futsal Player, Doug Reed, says Futsal suits Indian Culture well.
Futsal is a slightly modified game from football, played between two teams of five players each, one of them being the goalkeeper. It is an indoor form of football. The viewership for football in India has tremendously increased in the past couple of years as the new generation is being drawn towards the faster pace of football in place of the longer duration format of cricket.
It was an extraordinary idea to introduce Futsal in India along with the legends on board like Luis Figo, Ronaldinho (later replaced by Cafu for the season), Paul Scholes, Ryan Giggs, Hernan Crespo, Falcao and Salgado to grab the attention of the Indian viewers.
Out of the six teams of Chennai 5s, Mumbai 5s, Kolkata 5s, Bengaluru 5s, Goa 5s and Kochi 5s; the ones that made their destination to the finals were Kochi 5s and Mumbai 5s where Mumbai 5s came out on top after a fiercely fought battle.
