Dipa Karmakar, from Tripura, created history when she became the first Indian gymnast to qualify for the individual vault finals at the Rio Olympics. Notably, she managed to achieve the feat in her first ever attempt, having made her debut at the Olympics. Her qualification score of 14.900 points proved to be just about enough, as she qualified in the 8th and final position for the final event.

Dipa sets an example for every aspiring athlete in the world by showcasing how true determination and hard work can work together to make the impossible possible. Not a lot of people know this, but the Sports  Authority of India had rejected her when she was 5 years of age because of a rare phenomenon called flat feet, which is known to be detrimental to gymnasts. That, however, did not deter Dipa as she spent many a day performing arduous exercises towards making the best out of a bad situation which would eventually, she hoped, set her on the path to greatness in gymnastics.

Having previously won numerous accolades at the 2014 Common Wealth Games and the Senior ART Gymnastics Asian Championships, to name a few, the resolute Dipa will be hoping to pounce at this well-earned opportunity of winning a medal for her country.
