The Indian twosome of Rohan Bopanna and Sania Mirza must have opened their eyes yesterday to a rather promising draw for team India. The field has seen withdrawals of notable Tennis players such as Stanislas Wawrinka, Serena Williams, Martina Hingis and the Bryan siblings, arguably because of the unpredictable Zika virus. Hingis and Williams notably have participated in the singles event in this year’s Olympic finals. This lacklustre draw permits our contingent to enter the fray with a real shot.

If the Indian duo manage to win their first round, which they should, then they’ll come face to face with the team that comes out on top out of Romania and Spain, which again should not be a huge bother for Mirza and Bopanna.

The other Spanish pair in the draw, however, belongs to the much more intimidating pair of Garbine Muguruza and Rafael Nadal. They are seeded third, but having relatively less experience in doubles, it cannot be speculated whether they will prove to be a difficult match or not. This question, again, shall become relevant in the Indian team’s context only in a medals’ match, which works well for India.
