The widely celebrated British TV show host, Piers Morgan, invited controversy with open arms when he tweeted, “Country with 1.2 billion people wildly celebrates 2 losing medals. How embarrassing is that?” in reply to a newspaper image shared by one Tariq Vaidya, depicting the grand welcome given to both Sakshi Malik and PV Sindhu on their Rio medals.

A whole nation united against him, which soon saw Morgan trending in all parts of India. He was instantly trolled back for his insensitive remark by the citizens of India, including celebrity author Chetan Bhagat, Twitter guru Suhel Seth and the outspoken Virendra Sehwag.  We liked Sehwag’s response the best, as he opened Morgan’s eyes to the appalling fact that England, being the inventors of Cricket, have never managed to win the World Cup.

As is the case with any story, there were two sides to this one as well. Piers does have a knack for getting into nonsensical arguments, but we’re inclined to side with him on this episode. Perhaps he could have articulated his tweet a little better, but the point that he’s trying to make is spot on. In spite of all the hate he received, he responded sportingly by tweeting, “1,200,000,000 people and not a single Gold medal at the Olympics?
Come on India, this is shameful. Put the bunting away & get training.”
