Despite the fact that Indian Tennis Players keep playing professionally throughout the year, the Olympics will always remain a long term goal for them. With the Olympics getting closer and closer, the citizens of India don’t know if they can count on Indian tennis players to bring a medal home as the 2016 build up hasn’t quite matched the heights or depths of the events of 2012.

For Rio 2016, India’s only hope of getting a medal for tennis arguably lies with the pair of Rohan Bopanna (World No.15) and Sania Mirza (World No.1) in the mixed doubles. Winning a medal in Olympics is not a piece of cake, but with these two strong, proven players India might be in with a chance.

Having finished in the top-10, Rohan Bopanna earned direct qualification for Rio 2016 and will pair up with veteran Leander Paes for men’s doubles. Leander Paes, who is going to make it to the Olympics for an impressive seventh time, has terribly slumped in rankings and his chances of getting a medal for the country look minimal, in spite of his long and illustrious career for his country.

Sania Mirza will be pairing up with Prarthana Thombare, who will be playing her first Olympics, for women doubles. But all eyes will be on the Sania-Rohan pair in the mixed doubles category. If Rohan keeps serving well, getting his returns right, and if Sania keeps doing her stuff at the back of the court- they could go on to win the whole thing!
